Bulldogs Fall In Regular Season Finale

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team was unable to score a goal in a 1-0 loss to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Grand Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The setback came in the regular-season finale to the unbeaten Lakers on Senior Day in Big Rapids.  The Bulldogs finish the regular season at 7-8-3 overall and 7-5-3 in GLIAC match play. Defending national champion GVSU improved to 16-0-2 overall and 15-0-0 in the GLIAC.

The Lakers' lone goal came at the 10:08 mark in the first half when Kayla Addison got a breakaway and passed the ball to Maria Brown in the goal box.  She netted it over FSU sophomore goalkeeper Rachel McCollum's (Grand Blanc) reach for the lone score of the contest.

Five of the Bulldog starters remained on the field in action for the full 90 minutes, including McCollum, sophomore defenders Amanda Foster (Byron Center) and Audra Merino (Belvidere, Ill) along with senior defenders Kasey Ruimveld (Vicksburg) and Mekyla Spraggins (Grand Rapids).

McCollum made five saves in the match with two in the first half and three in the second for the Bulldogs.

GVSU held the corner-kick advantage by a seven-to-four count. They also totaled 11 shots to only two for the Bulldogs. Both teams tallied 11 fouls in the contest with each team racking an identical four in the first half and seven in the second.

FSU honored its three seniors prior to their final home match including Ruimveld, Spraggins and forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa).

The match marked the conclusion of the 2011 regular-season for the Bulldogs, who will compete in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals for the second year in a row. The opponent and location will be determined by the league office and played on Tuesday, Nov. 1.  Pairings will be announced later this weekend after conference regular-season play has concluded.
