Bulldogs Battle SVSU To Double Overtime Tie At Home

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team had to battle both Saginaw Valley State and the weather elements on Sunday (Sept. 23) at the FSU Soccer Field where the Bulldogs came out with a 1-1 double overtime tie in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.

The contest was played under often rainy and drizzly conditions along with chilly temperatures in Big Rapids.

The visiting Cardinals struck for the only goal in the initial half when Kellsey Poston notched her first goal of the year on a cross into the box from Charley Porter at 28:27.

The score stood until 60:51 of the second half when the Bulldogs tied up the contest on sophomore midfielder Riley Wood's fourth goal of the season.  Her shot came off a deflection near the net with the assist credited to freshman midfielder Abby Meirndorf.

Neither team was able to score the rest of the way or in either of the overtime sessions.  

FSU held a 19-17 edge in total shots with both having eight on goal for the outing.  The Bulldogs outshot the Cardinals 7-5 in the opening frame and from that point on the shots were even the rest of the way with both teams generating nine shots in the second period, two each in the first overtime and one in the final 10-minute sudden death frame.

Bulldog junior goalkeeper Rachel McCollum played the entire 110 minutes in net and had seven saves for the Bulldogs while Laura Ivezaj did likewise for Saginaw Valley State and also tallied seven stops.

Freshman forward Casey Shauman led the Bulldogs with five total shots.  Wood added four shots, including a team-best two on goal.  Meanwhile, Porter netted four total attempts for SVSU.

Ferris State had 15 fouls in the match to 10 for the Cardinals.  Additionally, SVSU had three corner kick tries to only a single one for the Bulldogs.

With the tie, the Bulldogs are now 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in GLIAC play.  SVSU is currently 2-1-4 on the year and 1-0-3 in conference action.

It was FSU's second-straight double overtime contest at home following a 2-1 win over Northwood on Friday (Sept. 21) in which the Bulldogs scored the game-winner in the second extra period.

Ferris State will hit the road for two league outings in Ohio next weekend as the Bulldogs face league newcomers Walsh and Malone.  FSU visits Walsh on Friday (Sept. 28) for a 4 p.m. (ET) tilt before facing Malone on Sunday (Sept. 30) at 12 p.m. (ET).  Both outings will take place in Canton, Ohio.
