Bulldog Women's Soccer Falls To #6 GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - Nationally sixth-ranked Grand Valley State posted a pair of first-half goals at opportune times to beat Ferris State University 3-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's soccer action on Saturday (Oct. 6) at the FSU Soccer Field.

The unbeaten Lakers scored only 6:31 into the contest early in the first half and addded a second goal with only four seconds remaining in the period to take a 2-0 lead at intermission.  They added the only goal of the second half to account for the final margin.

The Lakers struck first at 6:31 as Jenny Shaba notched her third goal of the year off an Alyssa Mira assist on a shot that just made it over Bulldog junior goalkeeper Rachel McCollum's reach.

Then, late in the half, the Lakers added a key second goal at 44:56 as Cassandra Wiltshire made a nice move in the box to get a shot past the Bulldog defense with time ticking down following a corner kick try from Shelby Humphries.

The final goal took place at 64:36 of the second half when Mira notched her first marker of the year off a feed from Casey McMillan.

The Lakers overall held a 22-9 edge in total shots with eight coming on goal to only one for the Bulldogs.  The Lakers had 14 shots in the first half followed by eight in the final half compared to seven first-half attempts for FSU and only two in the second frame.

McCollum made five saves for the Bulldogs while GVSU's Chelsea Parise had one for the Lakers in earning the victory.

Both Casey Shauman and Leanne Boehm had three shots apiece for the Bulldogs with Maria Brown pacing GVSU with five in the contest.

The Bulldogs totaled nine fouls to four for the Lakers and GVSU held a 6-3 edge in corner kick tries.

Ferris State dropped to 4-4-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the GLIAC with the setback. Meanwhile, the Lakers improved to 10-0-2 overall and 6-0-1 in league play.

The Bulldogs are back on the road next week as FSU visits Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 12) for a 4 p.m. (ET) league matchup in Tiffin, Ohio, and then head to Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 14) with match time set for 12 p.m. (ET) in Findlay, Ohio.
