Women's Soccer Storms Past Northern Michigan At Home

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team braved the elements and handled the opposition well on Friday (Oct. 19) as FSU stormed past Northern Michigan by a 5-2 score in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at the FSU Soccer Field.

FSU started quickly with a goal from Leanne Boehm only 1:58 into the contest off a feed from midfielder Riley Wood.

However, Northern Michigan answered less than four minutes later when Tevun Sellers notched her second goal of the year with the assist going to Amelia Johnson on a header following a corner kick try in the box.

Ferris State took the lead for good when Boehm notched her second goal of the day at 29:51 off a pass into the box from forward Stephanie Garland.

FSU increased the advantage to 3-1 at 33:43 of the first half when Wood scored her sixth goal of the year from a pass by Nichole Boehnke.

NMU was able to close to within a goal at halftime as Kim Rietveld scored her first goal of the season at 42:08 in unassisted fashion.

Both goals of the second period belonged to the Bulldogs.  Wood recorded her second of the afternoon at 61:16 with Boehm credited with the assist.

Then, the final goal of the contest occurred at 69:01 as FSU's Boehnke scored off a pass by Abby Meirndorf to account for the final margin.

Ferris State held a 19-12 edge in total shots with 13 coming on goal to only seven for the Wildcats.  FSU also owned an 8-2 advantage in corner kick chances.  Ferris State had five fouls to four for NMU.

FSU's Maddie Haustein picked up her first collegiate victory in net as she made five saves in playing all 90 minutes in net.  On the opposite side, Shelby Conard also went the distance for Northern Michigan and stopped eight shots.

Ferris State improved to 6-5-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the GLIAC with the win while NMU fell to 3-11-0 overall and 2-8-0 in conference play.

The Bulldogs will play their final home match of the 2012 regular-season on Sunday, Oct. 21, as they host the Michigan Tech Huskies staring at 12 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
