Women's Soccer Falls In One-Goal Contest On The Road For Second-Straight Time

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the second consecutive contest, the Ferris State University women's soccer team battled a highly-ranked opponent close on the road, but came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision as the Bulldogs fell to Lewis (Ill.) on Saturday (Sept. 7) in Romeoville, Ill.

The host Flyers scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute as Jessica Chavez found the back of the net to hand FSU the setback.  The Bulldogs had previously suffered a 1-0 season opening overtime setback to returning NCAA Division II national qualifier Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday in Kenosha, Wis.

Lewis sophomores Maggie Moran and Lauren Grady made quick passes up the field to get Chavez the ball at the top of the 18-yard box on the game-winning goal.

The Flyers outshot the Bulldogs 12-6 with Ferris State earning more corner tries, by a 4-2 count.

A pair of Lewis goalkeepers, Jennifer Meyer and Arianna Nie, combined for the shutout in goal for the Flyers. Meanwhile, Savanna Wojtanowski and Rachel McCollum totaled a combined six saves in goal for the Bulldogs.  Both played an entire half each for FSU with McCollum making four of the six saves.

Ferris State was led by Riley Wood's two total shots while Chavez had a contest-high six for the Flyers and Moran added three shots.

FSU had 14 fouls to six for Lewis.

Ferris State will play its 2013 home opener on Friday, Sept. 13, as Madonna visits the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids for a 4 p.m. (ET) non-league contest.  The Bulldogs then host Northwood on Sunday, Sept. 15, in non-league action starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
