Bulldog Women's Soccer Wins For Third Time In Last Four Outings

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team tallied a pair of first-half goals en route to a 3-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) shutout victory over visiting Walsh in a weather-shortened contest on Friday (Oct. 4) afternoon at the FSU Soccer Field.

The Bulldogs recorded their second consecutive victory and third win in their last four contests by beating the Cavaliers.  The contest was stopped with 2:48 remaining in the second half as rainy weather and lightening struck, but both coaches and game officials agreed to call the game rather than moving to a weather delay.

FSU improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the GLIAC with the triumph while Walsh fell to 3-5-1 overall and 0-4 in league action.

Ferris State held a decisive 28-15 edge in total shots and received eight saves from freshman goalkeeper Savanna Wojtanowski in earning the win.

The Bulldogs struck first at 21:37 of the opening half as sophomore midfielder Abby Meirndorf notched her first goal of the year on a long shot off a middle feed from fellow sophomore forward Nichole Boehnke.

FSU added a second goal late in the half to take a 2-0 advantage when junior midfielder Riley Wood connected on her second goal of the campaign from freshman defender Meredith Smith, who moved the pass from the right for the shot to the corner.

The final Bulldog goal came at 54:20 as Boehnke netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season on a shot from the right side following a pass by Wood from the middle of the pitch.

The Bulldogs totaled 17 shots on net to eight for Walsh and also benefited from 11 fouls called on the Cavaliers with only eight of their own.  Each team had only a single corner kick and each was called for offsides twice in the outing.

Walsh's Michaella Stucky played the initial 82:05 in net for the visitors and made 13 saves before giving way to Dani Shambaugh, who had a single stop in 5:07 of action.

Junior Taylor DiCicco recorded a contest-high five total shots for the Bulldogs with four on net while four others added four shots, including Boehnke, Wood, Merindorf and junior Leanne Boehm.  Jessie Gearhart paced Walsh with five total shots.

The Bulldogs registered 16 shots in the opening period followed by 12 in the second half.

Ferris State wraps up its weekend homestand by hosting Malone on Sunday (Oct. 6) starting at 12 p.m. (ET).
