Ferris State Registers Weekend Sweep With Shutout GLIAC Win Over Malone

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team pulled off a weekend sweep and won its third consecutive contest with a dominating 3-0 win over Malone in a physical contest played under rainy conditions on Sunday (Oct. 6) at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the opening half and held a decisive 26-8 edge in total shots en route to the win, which was FSU's fourth triumph in its last five outings to date this campaign.

With the win, the Bulldogs also maintained at least a hold on second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) as they improved to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play under first-year head coach Andy McCaslin.

Ferris State struck early as sophomore forward Casey Shauman tallied her first goal of the year only 6:22 in the match on a header off an opposite side pass from junior midfielder Riley Wood.

The Bulldogs added a second goal less than seven minutes later as senior defender Amanda Foster recorded her first goal of the season on a header off a corner kick from junior Leanne Boehm at the 13:09 mark of the opening half.

The 2-0 Bulldog advantage stood up until the second half when FSU tacked on another goal at 54:07 as junior midfielder Taylor DiCicco posted her second marker of the season on a rebound shot in the box.  Assists were credited to both Shauman and sophomore forward Nichole Boehnke.

In addition to posting 26 total shots and allowing only eight shots for the Pioneers, FSU also had nine corner kick opportunities to none for Malone.  The Bulldogs had 11 total shots on net compared to eight for the visitors and Ferris State had five breakaway chances in which offsides was called.

Freshman Savanna Wojtanowski picked up the win in net for the Bulldogs as she made six saves in 75:24 of action before giving way to senior Rachel McCollum, who stopped two shots in the final 14:36 of the contest to hold onto the shutout victory.

Meanwhile, Staci Hackett totaled eight saves while playing all 90 minutes for Malone.

The contest became a physical one in the second half as the rain continued. Malone had nine fouls to four for the Bulldogs in the first half, but FSU was whistled for 15 fouls over the final 45 minutes compared to eight for the Pioneers. Overall, Ferris State had 19 fouls with Malone called 17 times.  A total of four yellow cards were also issued in the contest.

With the loss, Malone dropped to 3-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the GLIAC.

The Bulldogs will play a single contest this coming week on Saturday (Oct. 12) at archrival and league leader Grand Valley State.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. (ET) under the lights in Allendale.
