Overtime Goal Lifts Ferris State Women's Soccer To First Victory On Road

Big Rapids, Mich. - A header from junior forward Stephanie Garland in overtime lifted the Ferris State University women's soccer team to its first victory of the 2014 season on Tuesday (Sept. 16) as the Bulldogs reigstered a 2-1 overtime win over Indiana Wesleyan in non-league action.

Garland's goal came in the 98th minute and gave the Bulldogs the win at Wildcat Field in Marion, Ind., as FSU improved to 1-2-1 overall this season.

The goal came off a corner kick from FSU senior Leanne Boehm late in the first overtime period. Her kick was on target to the front of the box where Garland's header got past IWU goalkeeper Megan Weiss for the win.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening half depsite the fact the Bulldogs held a 5-2 edge in total shots during the first 45 minutes of play.

However, Indiana Welseyan struck first in the 62nd minute when Katy Long found Trisha Martinez , who was able to score for the hosts. But, FSU senior Riley Wood answered with her second goal of the year in the 70th minute as the Bulldogs tied the match back up.

Overall, Ferris State held a 17-4 edge in total shots with 10 coming on goal compared to four for the Wildcats.

Bulldog junior goalkeeper Maddie Haustein made a pair of saves in net for FSU while playing the entire 97:18 of the outing. On the opposite side, Megan Weiss stopped eight Bulldog scoring chances and also went the distance in net for IWU.

FSU held an 8-1 edge in corner kick tries and Indiana Wesleyan totaled nine fouls to only four for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State tallied five shots in the first half with 11 in the second and one in overtime while the Wildcats produced two in the opening frame with both one in the second and one in the extra action.

Boehm tallied the assist on each of the Bulldogs' two markers in the contest.

FSU returns home to open GLIAC play as the Bulldogs host archrival and defending national champion Grand Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 20) starting at 5 p.m. (ET) prior to the Anchor-Bone Classic football game between the two schools on the FSU campus.
