Findlay Stuns Bulldogs With Game-Winning Goal In Double OT

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team held a decided edge in scoring opportunities, but couldn't come up with the game-winner as the Bulldogs suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 double-overtime setback to visiting Findlay on Friday (Oct. 3) afternoon at the FSU Soccer Field.

Ferris State outshot the Oilers 33-14 for the day and fought back from an early 1-0 deficit before Findlay's Kirsten Furchey scored 5:50 into the second overtime to stun the Bulldogs.

UF's Danielle Hart notched the first goal of the afternoon only 8:06 into the opening period when her shot in the box got past FSU goalkeeper Maddie Haustein. It was assisted by Eryn Weber as the Oilers grabbed the early one-goal lead.

However, Ferris State equaled the score up at 53:29 of the second half when junior Casey Shauman tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a rebound shot in front of net. FSU's Abby Meirndorf picked up the assist. FSU also had a controversial first-half goal disallowed due to an offsides call near the net.

FSU had several opportunities to earn the victory down the stretch in the second period as the Bulldogs held a 17-4 margin in total shots for the second frame alone.

After neither team was able to score in the first overtime period, the Oilers finally got the game-winner as Furchey got by a Bulldog defender for a long shot into the corner of the net over the outstretched arms of Haustein.

In addition to owning a 33-14 edge in total shots, Ferris State also had 14 shots on goal to 11 for the Oilers. Also, FSU received eight corner kick tries to only three for Findlay in the contest.

Haustein made nine saves for the Bulldogs in playing the entire 105:05 in net while Findlay's Samantha Trimboli stopped 13 Bulldog shots on goal in going the distance to improve to 3-2 on the year.

Finally, the fouls ended up virtually even for the afternoon with Findlay called for seven compared to six for Ferris State.

The Bulldogs dropped to 1-5-2 on the year and 0-3-1 in the GLIAC with the setback. Four of FSU's five setbacks this year have come by a single goal.

Meanwhile, Findlay improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action with the overtime victory.

Ferris State wraps up its weekend homestand by hosting Malone on Sunday (Oct. 5) in a 12 p.m. (ET) league encounter at the FSU Soccer Field.
