Late Second Half Goal Leads Saginaw Valley State Past Bulldogs In Soccer Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - A late goal from Saginaw Valley State's Ashley Henderson enabled the host Cardinals to pull out a 2-1 win over Ferris State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Friday (Oct. 10) in University Center, Mich.

Henderson broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 83rd minute with an unassisted goal on a penalty shot in the right side of the net. From there, the Cardinals held on for the win.

After a scoreless first half of play, SVSU struck first at 59:03 when Henderson notched her first goal of the contest on a header off a crossing pass by Jennifer Goethals.

However, the Bulldogs tied the contest up at a goal apiece at 67:57 when junior Abby Meirndorf scored on a shot to the left side of the net on a penalty shot in unassisted fashion.

The tie score lasted nearly 15 minutes before the Cardinals got the eventual game-winner on Henderson's second goal of the afternoon.

Saginaw Valley State's Clarie Spleth remained unbeaten in net this season as she made four saves in 90 minutes of action while improving to 8-0-2 on the year.

Meanwhile, Ferris State's Savanna Wojtanowski suffered the setback while also making four saves in playing the entire 90 minutes.

SVSU held a 12-8 edge overall in total shots and both teams received four corner kick tries. The Bulldogs had four fouls in the outing compared to seven for Saginaw Valley State.

With the setback, the Bulldogs fell to 2-6-2 overall this season and SVSU now owns a 8-0-2 overall record to date.

Ferris State returns home to host Northwood in GLIAC action on Sunday (Oct. 12) with opening kick slated for 1 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids.
