Ferris State Women's Soccer Hands Michigan Tech First League Loss Of The Year

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team notched one of its biggest victories of the season as FSU handed the Michigan Tech Huskies its first conference loss of the year in a 2-0 road shutout on Friday (Oct. 24) night in Houghton.

The Bulldogs tallied a goal in each half while improving their winning streak to three-straight contests by virute of the win. The victory was an important one for Ferris State, which is battling for its fifth-straight GLIAC Tournament appearance with only a week left in the regular-season.

Senior midfielder Riley Wood scored the lone goal of the opening frame with a shot off her right foot from 10-yards out in the 44th minute of the contest. The unassisted shot gave FSU a lead the Bulldogs would not relinquish.

Ferris State later added a second goal at 71:01 of the second period on a shot from junior forward Nicole Boehnke. Her second goal of the year came from 10-yards out on the right side and was assisted by junior forward Stephanie Garland.

The Bulldog lead stood from there as FSU sophomore goalkeeper Savanna Wojtanowski picked up the shutout victory with nine total saves in 90 minutes of action.

Ferris State was outshot 14-9 for the evening and had only four shots on goal compared to nine for the Huskies, but FSU made the most of its opportunities in posting the victory. The Bulldogs kept the Huskies at bay despite the fact MTU held a 11-4 edge in total shots for the second half.

Michigan Tech's Jenna Phelps suffered the setback in goal while falling to 8-2-1 on the year. She had two saves in 90 minutes of time, but allowed both Bulldog markers.

Boehnkie paced FSU with five total shots, including two on goal in the outing, while MTU had three different individuals each record two shots on goal apiece.

Michigan Tech was called for eight fouls compared to five for FSU and the Huskies also had a pair of corner kick chances to one for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State improved to 6-7-2 overall and 5-4-1 in league play with the win while Michigan Tech fell to 9-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in GLIAC play.

The win came as part of a special "Dogs vs. Dogs" weekend as FSU and Michigan Tech are battling in four different sports over a 36-hour span on Friday and Saturday in either Big Rapids or Houghton.

Ferris State has currently won four of its last five contests overall to date this year.

The Bulldogs will conclude their trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula by visiting Northern Michigan on Sunday (Oct. 26) for a 12 p.m. (ET) league tilt in Marquette. FSU then visits Ohio Dominican on Oct. 30 for its final league regular-season contest.
