Ferris State Women's Soccer Receives Fifth-Straight GLIAC Tourney Berth; Will Visit GVSU For Quarterfinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team has officially received its fifth consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament berth and will hit the road for a quarterfinal-round match on Tuesday (Nov. 4).

The Bulldogs are seeded seventh among the eight qualifying teams and will visit number two seeded rival and defending NCAA-II National Champion Grand Valley State for a quarterfinal-round contest on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (ET) in Allendale, Mich.

Ohio Dominican earned the first seed for the league tournament after sharing the regular-season crown with the Lakers and will host eighth-seeded Northern Michigan on Tuesday in a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal match. Third-seeded Michigan Tech will host number six seed Walsh while fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State will host number five seed Ashland in the other quarterfinal-round matches.

The winners of Tuesday's quarterfinals will advance to the GLIAC Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 7, at the site of the highest remaining seed with the title game set for Sunday, Nov. 9.

Ferris State enters the tournament with a 6-9-2 overall record this season and placed seventh in the league regular-season play with a 5-6-1 conference mark.  Meanwhile, GVSU holds a 15-2-1 overall ledger and shared first place with a 10-1-1 mark in conference action.

Tuesday's meeting will represent the third matchup this year between the Bulldogs and the Lakers. GVSU won a close 3-2 decision in non-league play on Sept. 20 in Big Rapids before capturing the league match by a 7-2 count on Oct. 15 in Allendale.

Ferris State has compiled a current 3-6 all-time record (.333) in GLIAC Tournament matches.  The Bulldogs made their initial conference tourney appearance in 2007 (10/30/07) with a 3-2 quarterfinal-round loss at Saginaw Valley State.  FSU then registered a 2-0 home decision over Northern Michigan in the 2008 quarterfinals (11/4/08) before suffering a 3-0 semifinal-round setback at Grand Valley State (11/7/08).

In 2010, the Bulldogs dropped a 4-3 contest in the quarterfinals against Northern Michigan in Marquette (11/2/10) before a 1-0 loss the following year at Ashland (11/1/11) in the quarterfinal-round. Two years ago, in 2012, the Bulldogs upset Findlay 2-1 on the road in quarterfinal play (10/30/12) to reach the semifinals for the second time in school history before falling to GVSU by a 4-0 count (11/2/12).

Last season (2013), the Bulldogs stunned Ohio Dominican on the road in the quarter-final round by winning in a shootout after the two teams had battled to a 1-1 double-overtime thriller. FSU then fell in the semifinals to GVSU on the Lakers' home field in Allendale by a 7-0 score.

This year's visit represents the Bulldogs' fifth consecutive conference tournament appearance, which is the longest stretch in program history. FSU has reached the semfinals each of the past two seasons to date.

Overall, the Bulldogs won three of their final five conference regular-season encounters this season.
