Ferris State Women's Soccer Season Ends In Fifth-Straight GLIAC Tourney Appearance

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team saw its 2014 season come to a close on Tuesday (Nov. 4) evening as the Bulldogs dropped a 4-0 decision to defending national champion and archrival Grand Valley State in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Quarterfinals at Allendale, Mich.

FSU, seeded seventh overall, was making its fifth-straight GLIAC Tournament appearance, which represents the best stretch in school history.

The two teams were meeting for the third time this campaign following a close non-league decision for the Bulldogs in Big Rapids on Sept. 20 prior to a league regular-season setback agianst GVSU on Oct. 15 in Allendale.

Following a scoreless first 26 minutes of action, the Lakers scored twice in the final 19 minutes of the second half to grab a 2-0 halftime lead.

The first GVSU goal came from Katie Klunder, who fired a shot on goal from in front after a pass at the top of the 18-yard box from Jenny Shaba. Klunder's third marker of the season proved to be the eventual game-winner and came at 26:45 of the opening half.

The Lakers pushed their lead to 2-0 as Katie Bounds tallied her seventh goal this season in unassisted fashion on a loose ball in the 42nd minute of the first period.

In the second half, GVSU's Marti Corby and Gabriella Mencotti both found the back of the net to account for the final margin. Corby's goal was at 51:31 and came off a pass on a corner kick by Shaba for her 11th of the season.

Meanwhile, Mencotti's goal represented her 13th of the year and took place at 57:45 with an assist credited to Charlie Socia.

The Lakers limited FSU's scoring opportunities in the contest as Grand Valley State posted a 20-5 edge in total shots and had nine on goal to none for the Bulldogs. GVSU also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, but did commit 15 fouls to only eight for FSU.

The win was credited to Grand Valley State's Andrea Strauss, who moved to 16-2-1 on the year while playing the entire 90 minutes of action. FSU sophomore Savanna Wojtanowski made five saves in 90 minutes of work for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State closed the year with a 6-10-2 overall record while the second-seeded Lakers advanced to the semifinal round and are currently 16-2-1 on the year.

The setback also marked the final contest for four FSU seniors in midfielders Leanne Boehm, Taylor DiCicco and Riley Wood along with forward Stephanie Garland.
