Strong Second Half Keys Quincy Past Bulldogs In Women's Soccer Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled Quincy (Ill.) much of the way before the host Hawks captured a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs in non-conference regional action on Sunday (Sept. 6) in Quincy, Ill.

The Hawks, who shutout two-time defending national champion Grand Valley State to open the campaign on Friday, scored three times in the second half en route to the win over the Bulldogs, who fell to 0-2 on the year after a lengthy road trip to open the season.

Ferris State and Quincy not only battled each other, but also scorching temperatures in the mid 90's during the afternoon contest at Legends Stadium.

The two teams were even at halftime and Quincy did not get on the board until the 57th minute of the contest when a corner kick from QU's Maddy Kuhlenberg sailed to the far post and was deflected into the back of the net by a FSU defender for an own goal.

Quincy pushed its advantage to 2-0 in the 81st minute as Ashley Burton tallied her second goal of the year on a shot aided by Caroline Basler, who picked up the assist.

The final goal by the Hawks came in the 87th minute when Abby Pulliam scored on a cross to the far post to make it a three-goal contest.

The Hawks held a commanding 23-3 edge in total shots, including a 12-0 advantage in the opening half of action. They also recorded all six corner kick tries in the contest.

The setback spoiled a solid effort in net by FSU senior goalkeeper Maddie Haustein, who recorded 14 saves in 90 minutes of action. QU's Megan Swanson earned the win by going the distance and making two saves for the Hawks.

Freshman Carley Dubbert led the Bulldogs with two shots in the match, including one on net. Meanwhile, Haylye Markway had seven shots and three on goal for the Hawks with Burton and Pulliam both adding four on goal.

Ferris State returns home and will host Indiana Wesleyan in non-league action on Wednesday (Sept. 9) in the 2015 home opener at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids. The contest is slated for a 4 p.m. (ET) start. FSU will play five of its next six outings at home.
