Ferris State Women's Soccer Wins Third-Straight With School-Day Victory

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team kept its win streak alive on a special afternoon Tuesday (Sept. 15) as the Bulldogs beat Aquinas 1-0 in non-league action at River Street Park in Big Rapids.

The victory came during a unique school-day contest that saw the entire Riverview Elementary school in attendance for the outing on a warm and sunny afternoon. The match was held in partnership with both the City of Big Rapids and the local school system.

After a scoreless opening half, the Bulldogs finally found the scoreboard in the 65th minute of the contest when senior forward Nichole Boehnke tallied her third goal of the year and third in as many games on a header in the box off a cross assisted by Mandy Paull.

The second-half tally would prove to be the only scoring the Bulldogs needed as the reigning GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week Maddie Haustein recorded her third consecutive shutout in net to help FSU to its third-straight win in the past week.

Haustein played all 90 minutes in net and made three saves in the FSU victory to improve to 3-2 overall this season. 

Overall, Ferris State was outshot 10-8 in the defensive struggle as both teams' scoring opportunities were limited throughout the day. FSU had only three shots in the first half before coming up with five in the final 45 minutes, including the goal by Boehnke.

On the Aquinas side, Lindsay Armstrong suffered the loss while making five stops in 90 minutes. The Saints dropped to 2-2-1 overall this year with the setback.

Boehnke led the Bulldogs with three total shots, including two on goal in the victory. Aquinas had eight fouls to three for Ferris State.

As part of the early afternoon start, the Bulldog soccer team also took part in an all-school assembly at Riverview on Tuesday morning with school students attending the matchup against the Saints in the afternoon.

In addition to taking part in the 20-minute assembly and being introduced to the students, the FSU soccer players also spent time reading to the kids and helping them with their homework until warm-ups for the contest began. 

"This is another example of creating win-win experiences for the youth of our town and our student athletes," said Associate Athletics Director Jon Coles. "We will continue to chaperone activity nights, read in classrooms, etc. However, this experience like the basketball game we held last year is one that these kids might never forget.

"We have a great relationship with the City and Schools and we're extremely thankful for their support of Bulldog Athletics," he added.

The Bulldogs continue a four-match homestand as they open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play in Big Rapids on Friday (Sept. 18) versus Tiffin starting at 4 p.m. (ET). FSU then hosts Walsh on Sunday (Sept. 20) in a 12 p.m. (ET) league home tilt.
