Ferris State Drops Opening Contest Of Weekend Trip To Upper Peninsula

Big Rapids, Mich. - A single first-period goal proved to be enough for host Michigan Tech as the Huskies claimed a 1-0 league-opening win over the Ferris State University women's soccer team on Friday (Sept. 23) night under the lights at Sherman Field in Houghton.

The Huskies' Jacqueline Mielke notched her third goal of the year unassisted in breakaway fashion at 20:13 of the opening period and from there Michigan Tech kept the Bulldogs at bay in winning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tilt in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan Tech picked up its fifth victory in six tries this campaign with the triumph while FSU dropped to 2-5 overall. The contest was the Bulldogs' first on a two-match weekend trip to the UP.

The Huskies prevailed despite being outshot 12-11 by the Bulldogs, which included an 8-5 FSU edge in the opening frame. Ferris State also had four corner kick tries to only a single one for Michigan Tech.

MTU's Kirsen Hudak was victorious in net as she made four saves in 90 minutes of work while the Bulldogs' Nyla Peterkin dropped her second decision of the year despite making five saves in 90 minutes of action.

FSU was paced offensively by Rachel Fouts, who netted seven total shots, including two on goal in the setback.

The Huskies finished with seven of the 10 combined fouls issued on the night during the contest.

Ferris State will wrap up its weekend trip by visiting Northern Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 25) for a 12 p.m. (ET) league contest in Marquette.
