Ferris State Soccer Notches First Win Of Year In Shutout Fashion

Bristol, Tenn. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team topped the King University Tornado 3-0 on Sunday (Sept. 3) and did not allow a single shot on goal en route to their first win of the 2017 season.

Junior forward and captain Carley Dubbert scored the game-winner early and the Bulldogs netted two additional markers n the final 19 minutes to seal their first win of the campaign.

After Dubbert netted the winner 12 minutes into the contest, a flurry of freshmen did the leg work from there. Freshmen Kira Budzynski and Mackenzie Dawes had the assists on Dubbert's goal.

A pair of Bulldog freshmen also linked up to give FSU a 2-0 lead when Bri Rogers scored at 71 minutes from Abigail Gilmore on a header off a corner kick. 

The Bulldogs added a final tally in the 85th minute when freshman Janelle Quinn scored from fellow first-year player Alex Halstead to account for the final margin.

Ferris State controlled the ball for the entirety of the match and outshot the Tornado 26-2 overall with a 13-0 shots on goal edge. 

The Bulldogs had 12 shots in the first half and 14 in the second frame. Tornado goaltender Olivia Drake finished with 10 saves on 13 shots and fell to 0-2 on the year. Tornado forward Miranda Smith had both of King's shots for the day.

Senior goaltender Nyla Peterkin earned with win and shutout in net for Ferris State.

The Bulldogs were able to rotate several players as 23 saw time in the win over King.

With the victory, Ferris State improves to 1-1 overall and returns home this week to take on the nationally 19th-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks on Friday (Sept. 8) at 4 p.m. (ET) in their home opener at the new South Athletic Fields on the FSU campus.
