Late First-Half Goal Leads #10 Minnesota State Past Ferris State In Soccer Home Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer squad battled nationally 10th-ranked Minnesota State to the wire on Friday (Sept. 8) in the Bulldogs' 2017 home opener, but suffered a 1-0 setback to the Mavericks at the South Athletic Fields on the FSU campus.

Minnesota State's Julia Mixon scored the lone goal of the contest on a long, unassisted deep shot at 39:12 of the opening half to account for the only score in the non-league showdown.

The Bulldogs had opportunities and forced the play down the stretch, but were unable to get the equalizer. FSU outshot the Mavericks 8-6 in the second half.

Overall, Minnesota State held a 16-13 edge in total shots after generating 10 opportunities in the opening 45 minutes of action. The Mavericks finished with 13 shots on goal to seven for FSU.

Additionally, the Mavericks also had three tries from the corner while Ferris State finished with three corner kick chances. MSU had seven fouls to six called against the Bulldogs on FSU's Turf Field.

Bulldog sophomore goaltender Grace Kraft suffered the loss in net for FSU despite making 12 saves in 90 minutes of work. Meanwhile, Taylor Livermore earned the win for the Mavericks with seven saves and she also went the distance as Minnesota State improved to 2-0 on the year.

Ferris State will be back in action at home on Sunday (Sept. 10) as the Bulldogs host Cedarville (Ohio) in a 2 p.m. (ET) non-league contest at the South Athletic Fields.
