Ferris State Takes Fifth-Ranked GVSU To Wire In Tightly-Contested GLIAC Soccer Showdown

Allendale, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled the nationally fifth-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers on Sunday (Oct. 1), but suffered a 1-0 setback in a tightly-contested Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup at the GVSU Soccer Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Kraft made six saves, including one on a penalty shot in a strong effort for Ferris State.

Tara Lierman scored the lone goal of day for Grand Valley State at 12:33 of the opening half.

As the contest went towards the half, Ferris State had gained solid footing in the match until a Grand Valley penalty shot. The first of two for the game, the Lakers missed wide as the score stayed 1-0 into the half.

By the midway point of the second half, Ferris State stated to get quality looks, but a chance by freshman midfielder Alex Halstead rolled just wide left of the cage before the Bulldogs could tap it home.

Grand Valley's second penalty shot of the day was thwarted due to a diving stop by Kraft, who flew left to right and got both hands on the ball to keep Ferris State within one.

The Lakers held onto their lead for the remainder to stay perfect in GLIAC play. 

For the afternoon, Grand Valley had 10 corner kicks to Ferris State's 1 and the shots on goal were 7-2 in favor of the Lakers.

With the loss, Ferris State falls to 2-1 the GLIAC and 6-5-0 overall.

The Bulldogs next hit the road for a weekend Ohio swing this coming week. FSU battles Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 6) at noon before visiting Ashland on Saturday (Oct. 7) for another 12 p.m. (ET) league start.
