Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 12th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer squad had its school-record 14-match unbeaten streak halted on Friday (Oct. 19) as the Bulldogs suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 setback in double overtime to rival and top-ranked Grand Valley State in a showdown at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
The Bulldogs and the Lakers battled even the entire way with GVSU finally scoring the game-winner in the 107th minute of the contest to stay perfect in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. The match pitted the top two teams in the GLIAC.
After a scoreless first half, FSU struck first at 60:46 of the second half when freshman Pia Nagel scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year off an assist from Abigail Gilmore.
However, the Lakers responded less than two minutes later when Cecilia Steinwascher tallied an unassisted goal at 62:02 to knot the contest up.
The two teams then battled the rest of regulation and the entire first overtime without a goal until GVSU finally produced the game-winner off the foot of Haley Dehaan in the second overtime at 107:04 of the contest. Steinwascher picked up another point with the assist on the game-winning tally.
Grand Valley State held a 23-7 edge in total shots for the day with a 10-2 margin in shots on goal. The Lakers also had all 11 corner kicks in the afternoon affair.
In goal, FSU's Alison Chesterfield suffered her first loss of the season as she made eight saves in the outing. Jessica Radice improved to 15-0-1 overall for the Lakers with a single save in earning the win.
Ferris State now owns a 12-2-2 overall record this year and the Bulldogs are now 4-1-2 in the GLIAC. GVSU improved to 15-0-1 and 7-0 in league play while securing the top overall seed for the conference tournament.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 21, as they host the Davenport Panthers in the regular-season home finale with match time set for 12 p.m. (ET) at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
