Ferris State Soccer Punches Ticket To NCAA Sweet 16 With Home Field Win

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 13th ranked Ferris State university punched their ticket to the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 1-0 victory over the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots at the Bulldog Soccer Field on Saturday (Nov. 10) to extend the winningest season in school history.

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs finally found the goal to break the tie in the NCAA Division II Tournament Second Round contest at 48:53 when junior Tia VanSuilichem finished a ball cross-frame for her fifth goal of the season and the eventual game-winner, with the assist going to freshman Pia Nagel (4).

From there, the Bulldogs had to withstand a barrage of chances, including a breakaway for OVU leading scorer Fernanda Araya. Ferris State junior goalkeeper slid down and stretched out her right leg for what became a game-saving stop in the late stages of the second half.

For Ferris State, Chesterfield wrapped up a nine-save shutout to move to 10-1-0 on the season, her fifth shutout of the year as the Bulldogs hung on in the waning moments for the 1-0 victory.

The Fighting Scots outshot Ferris State 21-8 with a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.

The win is Ferris State's extends the school record single-season win mark to 17 as they move to 17-3-3 overall and head for the NCAA Regional Championship Match.

The Bulldogs will play the winner of Walsh University vs. Grand Valley State on Friday, Nov. 16, with game time and venue still to be determined pending the outcome of their tilt on Sunday.
