Ferris State Erupts For Six Goals In Win Over Davenport

Big Rapids, Mich. – The nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team erupted for a 6-0 victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Davenport University (Panthers) on Friday (Sept. 27) at the Bulldog Soccer Field. The game did not count towards the GLIAC standings.

For Ferris State, sophomore Pia Nagel scored twice and added an assist while junior Mackenzie Dawes had a goal and an assist in the contest. Fellow junior Bri Rogers also scored twice for Ferris State as the Bulldogs hit six goals in a game for the first time since Oct. 19, 2014 against Lake Erie in a 6-1 victory. A total of 26 different Bulldogs saw action in the contest.

The Bulldogs scored three times in less than eight minutes early in the first half to leap ahead of the Panthers. Dawes opened the scoring for Ferris State at 10:42 with her first goal of the season. Nagel drove to the goal and was upended by Davenport keeper Samantha Beckles. The loose ball found Dawes, who fired it over the line for a 1-0 Bulldog lead and the eventual game-winning goal. Nagel earned her second assist of the season on the goal.

It took only 96 seconds for the Bulldogs to double the lead to 2-0 when Nagel made an identical play to the first goal, but finessed a low shot to the left goal post before the keeper could react for her fifth goal of the year at 11:48 of the half. Junior Maddie Dickens earned her first assist of the year on Nagel's first goal of the game.

Later, at 18:35, Nagel got in on a two-on-one and elected for a shot to the left side of the cage. Nagel's second goal of the game was her team-best sixth of the season, which gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead heading into the half. Dawes picked up her fourth assist of the season on the goal.

In the second half, Ferris State started the onslaught early again, when Rogers found the rebound off of sohomore Grace VerHage and laced it through the defense for her first goal of the season, giving the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead at 54:25. VerHage earned her third assist of the season on the goal.

A little over 20 minutes later, at 75:53, junior Janelle Quinn was dropped hard in front of the goal and earned a penalty shot. Rogers took the shot and fired it high to the right side of the goal for her second goal of the game and a 5-0 Ferris State lead. 

With the goal, Rogers tied the school record for most career penalty kick goals, set in 2007 by Kristie Smilanich at six.

In the closing minutes, freshman Payton Price picked up the rebound of her own shot and launched it by the Davenport keeper for her first collegiate goal. Senior Morgan Irwin earned her first assist of the season on Price's goal.

In goal, senior goalkeeper Grace Kraft ran her shutout streak to two games and 180 minutes as she earned the victory, making four stops in the win. Beckles took the loss for Davenport, allowing six Ferris State goals on 14 shots on goal.

Ferris State finished with a 23-8 shots advantage and a 14-4 shots on goal lead for the game. Both teams took two corner kicks for the match.

The Bulldogs have outscored opponents 15-1 on the season.

Ferris State, undefeated at 6-0-1, puts their record to the test against the Ashland Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 12 p.m. (ET) at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
