Bulldogs Take Down Timberwolves To Advance To GLIAC Tournament Semi-Finals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team took down the Northwood Timberwolves 6-0 on Sunday (Nov. 10) at the Bulldog Soccer Field to advance to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals.

Sophomore Pia Nagel finished with a goal and two assists to aid the Bulldogs past the Timberwolves while senior goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield made five saves for her sixth shutout of the season.

On the day, Ferris State's Nagel inched closer to history in several categories. Nagel's 33 single-season points are now fifth most all-time. Her seven assists are fourth most in a single season in school history. Nagel's 13 goals are now fourth best all-time, tied with all-time career leading point-scorer Emily Rogers (2003). Nagel is also now seventh in program history in career goals with 23 and eighth in points with 57.

Ferris State finished with a 32-9 advantage in shot attempts and 17-5 in shots on goal throughout the match.

Ferris State junior Maddie Dickens registered her first collegiate goal which stood as the game-winning tally just 4:50 into the match off a free kick to give Ferris State a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added to the lead at 24:30 when junior Bri Rogers finished a low shot in a scramble for a 2-0 Ferris State lead. Senior Tia VanSuilichem picked up the assist for her fourth of the season to help the Bulldogs pull in front 2-0.

Early in the second half, piled onto the lead. Nagel drove in her team-leading 13th goal of the season at 50:12. Dickens added to her big day with her fourth assist of the season as Ferris State pulled ahead 3-0.

It took a little over six minutes for the Bulldogs to put a fourth goal on the board, when sophomore Emily Mergener scored her second of the season on a low cross-frame shot that snuck beneath the arm of Northwood goalkeeper Andrea Everett at 56:35. Nagel added her sixth assist of the season on Mergener's goal and a 4-0 FSU lead.

Then, at 65:25, Nagel added her seventh assist of the year when Mackenzie Dawes buried her seventh goal of the season for a 5-0 Ferris State lead. 

Ferris State wrapped up the scoring at 71:24 when senior Maddie Dickens finished a low shot inside the left goal post for her third goal of the season. Dawes picked up her team-leading eighth assist of the season, good now for third most in a single season in school history, tied with Emily Rogers (2001) and Kristie Smilianich (2007).

For the Bulldogs, Chesterfield picked up her seventh win of the season and 18th career victory, to go with her 13th career shutout. Her 13 shutouts are third most in school history.

Ferris State will take on the Grand Valley State Lakers in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals in Allendale on Friday (Nov. 15) at the GVSU Soccer Field with game time to be announced.
