Bulldog Soccer Falls In Hard-Fought Battle In GLIAC Tourney Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer squad battled top-seeded Grand Valley State well in the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals on Friday (Nov. 15) evening, but suffered a 3-0 setback at the GVSU Soccer Stadium in Allendale.

The Bulldogs had opportunities early on against the Lakers in the opening half of play before the Lakers put up two goals in a nine-minute span late in the first half to grab the advantage. GVSU then added a late second half goal to account for the final margin.

Ferris State, which was ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Rankings, still has hopes for a potential second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth despite the loss. The top eight teams in the region will move on to the national tournament with the official selection announcement set for Monday evening at 6 p.m. (ET) at NCAA.com.

In the league semifinals, the nationally second-ranked Lakers put the first goal on the board in the 20th minute when Chantel Carranza notched her second goal of the year and first of the contest off an assist from Riko Sagar and Ava Cook.

Carranza added her second tally at 29:12 of the first half on a feed from Sagara to make it 2-0 at halftime in the Lakers' favor.

The final GVSU goal came at 77:35 of the final half when Greta Deloach notched her first marker of the year from Darline Radamaker.

Overall, the Lakers held a 22-5 edge in total shots, but the shots on goal advantage was narrower at 7-3 for the evening. Grand Valley State also earned eight corner kick tries to three for FSU.

GVSU's Jessica Radice earned the win with three saves overall in 90 minutes of work as the Lakers advanced to the tourney championship game. FSU senior Alison Chesterfield also played all 90 minutes and finished with three saves as well for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State dropped to 13-5-2 overall this season with the setback and four of the Bulldogs' five setbacks this year are against teams ranked near the top of the region in GVSU and Ashland.
