Big Day For VerHage Paces Bulldogs Past Pride

Hammond, Ind. - A pair of goals and an assist from junior Grace VerHage pushed the Ferris State University women's soccer team past the Purdue Northwest Pride in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Sunday (March 21).

The Pride held the Bulldogs off the board on their first six shots, but VerHage set up senior Abigail Gilmore who put a left foot on the ball in tight to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 39:15 of the first half.

A little over three minutes later, VerHage took a 20-yard rip for the lower left corner that gave Ferris State a 2-0 lead into the break.

Ferris State extended its lead at 79:52 when junior Pia Nagel busted through on a breakaway for her first goal of the season, giving FSU a 3-0 lead. Nagel picked up her 24th career goal, which is good for the most among active Bulldogs.

With less than two minutes to play, freshman Sydney Stones tallied her first collegiate assist when she set up VerHage from the right edge of the box. VerHage netted her second goal of the day and season on the play to cap a five-point outburst for the Bulldogs.

In goal, junior Nora Potter picked up her first collegiate victory and shutout, making one stop in the process.

Ferris State had an 18-3 edge in shot attempts with an 11-1 mark in shots on goal. The Bulldogs attempted 10 corners and held the Pride without one.

With the win, the Bulldogs moved to 2-0 on the year. Ferris State returns home to take on Saginaw Valley State on Friday (March 26) at 4 p.m. (ET) at the South Athletic Complex before a Sunday (March 28) date with the Ashland Eagles at 1 p.m. (ET).
