Bulldogs Cruise Past Cardinals To Earn Right To Host GLIAC Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the first time in school history, the nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team earned the right to host the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals with a 3-0 win over the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Tuesday (April 27) in quarterfinal-round action at the Bulldog Soccer Field.

Ferris State tilted the field with a 34-5 advantage in shot attempts and 17-2 in shots on goal as the Bulldogs rode a three-goal second half into the semifinals.

The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie when senior Gabrielle Teodorescu flipped a shot past SVSU keeper Alyssa Watts near the left goal post, givinup FSU a 1-0 lead early in the second half at 45:41. Senior Maddie Dickens picked up her second assist of the campaign on the eventual game-winning goal.

Later, at 54:21, SVSU's Watts hauled down junior Emily Mergener in front of an open cage to give the Bulldogs a penalty try. Senior Bri Rogers capitalized for her first goal of the season and extended her program record for career PK goals to eight to make it a 2-0 contes.

Then, 20 minutes later, junior Pia Nagel battled a rebound past Watts in tight for her fourth goal of the season and a 3-0 Bulldog advantage. Junior Grace VerHage picked up her team-leading fourth helper of the season on the play.

In goal, Ferris State junior keeper Taryn Meiste moved to 7-0-1 on the year with her seventh shutout. The seventh clean sheet ties Meiste for the second-most in school history in a single-season and only two back of Grace Kraft (2016) for the most ever. Meiste ran her shutout streak to 494:50, good for the third-longest team streak in program history.

With the win, the Bulldogs draw the Grand Valley State Lakers in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals set for Friday (April 30) at the Bulldog Soccer Field. Ferris State will also host the other semifinal between the Ashland Eagles and Northern Michigan Wildcats with the title game in Big Rapids on Sunday (May 2).
