Women's Tennis Opens Season With Shutout
Univ. Center, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis
team opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 9-0 shutout victory on the
road against Saginaw Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Friday (Sept. 4) afternoon at
Univ. Center, Mich.
The Bulldogs captured five of the six singles flights in
straight-sets and took all three doubles encounters in the
commanding victory.
Ferris began the day by winning all three doubles spots with two of
them by identical 8-1 scores. The closest doubles match came
at the number one position where juniors Amy Ingle
(Battle Creek/Hastings) and Tiffany Rheynard
(Kalamazoo/Gull Lake) teamed up for a 9-7 victory.
In singles action, the Bulldogs won five flights in two sets.
The narrowest tilt came at the second spot where Rheynard defeated
SVSU's Debra Hammond by a 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 score.
Two of the Bulldogs' singles triumphs came by scores of 6-0, 6-0
with sophomore Melissa Flowers (Orland Park,
Ill./Carl Sandburg) and senior Daniela Dimas
(Mexico City, Mexico) winning at the fifth and sixth flights,
respectively.
The Bulldogs' opening day lineup consisted of one senior, two
juniors, two sophomores and a freshman in Tabitha
Simpson.
Ferris State will next compete in the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships Sept. 18-20 in
Indianapolis, Ind.
FSU's next dual match will also serve as its first league home encounter of the campaign when the Bulldogs host Lake Superior State on Friday, Sept. 25, at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (EDT).
