FSU Splits First Two Matches At GLIAC Tourney

East Lansing, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis team split a pair of matches in opening day action at the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Saturday (Oct. 24) in East Lansing, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who were seeded sixth overall in the draw, suffered a 5-2 setback to third-seeded Michigan Tech in the morning quarterfinal round held at the Michigan Athletic Club.  FSU then bounced back to post a 5-3 triumph over seventh-seeded Lake Superior State in the afternoon consolation action at the MAC facility.

With the Saturday split, the Bulldogs will conclude the tournament by facing number five seed Ashland on Sunday (Oct. 25) in the fifth-place match with the starting time set for 10 a.m. (ET).

In the match against Michigan Tech, the Huskies took two of the three doubles flights and then captured three of the first four completed singles positions to notch the win.  FSU's lone victories came at third doubles and at fifth singles, where sophomore Natalie Diorio topped Danielle Stoll in straight-sets by scores of 6-1, 6-2 in the match.

Ferris responded by beating Lake Superior State in the second round.  FSU emerged victorious at the second and third doubles spots and recorded three singles win with victories by Diorio, junior Amy Ingle and senior Daniela Dimas.

The Bulldogs will enter Sunday's fifth-place match with a 6-5 overall record this campaign under third-year head coach Alex Palladino.  The GLIAC Tournament is being held in East Lansing for the first time with matches at both the Michigan Athletic Club and the Michigan State University Tennis Facility.
