Women's Tennis Opens Homestand With Win

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis team opened a three-match Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) homestand with a narrow 5-4 win over Ashland on Thursday (Oct. 7) afternoon.

The match took place at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs took the second and third doubles flights in building a one-point edge heading into the singles round.

In singles play, FSU received wins from senior Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania) at the number one flight along with senior Amy Ingle (Battle Creek/Hastings) in second flight play and sophomore Tabitha Simpson (Copley, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary's) at the sixth singles position.

All six singles flights were determined in straight-sets with the closest doubles contest being decided by an 8-5 score at the second flight.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 both overall and in league play with the key GLIAC victory.  Meanwhile, Ashland dropped to 8-3 overall and 7-3 in conference action.

Ferris next faces league newcomer Ohio Dominican for the first time on Friday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m. (EDT).  FSU will then play its final GLIAC regular-season match with a league tilt against another new league school in Lake Erie on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. (EDT).
