Women's Tennis Drops GLIAC Tourney Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis team suffered a 5-1 setback to Ashland in the opening round of the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Friday (Oct. 21) evening at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

The fourth-seeded Eagles advanced to the semifinals as they swept the Bulldogs in the doubles round and captured two of the first three completed singles flights.

The lone victory for the fifth-seeded Bulldogs came from senior Mary Coleman, who was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over AU's Sally Trout at the number six singles position.

Ferris State dropped to 8-5 overall this season with the loss while the Eagles improved to 11-3 on the year.

The Bulldogs will square off against eighth-seeded Saginaw Valley State in the second round of the conference tournament on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 3:45 p.m. (ET). Final round play is set for Sunday (Oct. 23) at 9:30 a.m. (ET).

Ashland advanced to the semifinals and will take on top-seeded Northwood on Saturday while second-seeded Wayne State faces third-seeded Grand Valley State in the other semifinal match.
