Ferris State Announces Men's & Women's Tennis Coaching Staff Appointments

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University has announced the hiring of Mark Doren as the interim head men's and women's tennis coach along with Nancy Henderson as the assistant coach for both programs, according to an announcement made by FSU Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger.

A 2006 graduate of FSU's Professional Tennis Management (PTM) program, Doren will take over for former head coach Daniel Hangstefer, who recently accepted another position on the NCAA Division I level. Henderson will serve as the assistant for the Bulldogs, who are currently midst the fall season.

"We're excited to name Mark Doren as our interim head coach and believe he'll do a great job running both programs along with Nancy Henderson," said Weisenburger. "Together, Mark and Nancy have the ability and background to continue to build on the success both programs have achieved over the years.

"We're thankful for the time Daniel put into leading both teams and wish him all the best in his new position," he added.

Doren has served as the administrative assistant for the PTM program at FSU for the past year where he has been responsible for recruitment and assisted in teaching program classes. He's also helped lead player development to improve student abilities.

Along with working at FSU, Doren has been the head tennis professional since 2008 at the MVP Athletic Club in West Michigan. In that role, he's organized and coached all travel teams and expanded club revenue with growth in all programs. During his time with the club, he's also developed a successful elite junior program that has produced upwards of 15 collegiate student-athletes.

Doren's background also includes time as the assistant tennis professional at the Coral Ridge Country Club from 2006-08 and he served as an aircraft armament systems individual with the United States Air Force from 1996-99. A certified United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Elite Professional, Doren served as the PTM Student Association president while earning his degree and has been honored as the recipient of both the Scott Schultz Excellence Award and the Rick Calton Professionalism Award.

Meanwhile, Henderson also brings a strong background to the Bulldog program. During her collegiate career, she competed at both the number one singles and doubles positions at Saginaw Valley State University and was a three-time team MVP award winner.

A certified elementary schol teacher, Henderson was the 2018 U.S. Open pickleball champion and has served as a tennis coach at the high school level at both Star of the Sea High School along with Grosse Pointe North. The longtime teacher has also been a tennis instructor. She earned her collegiate degree from Saginaw Valley State.

FSU is currently midst the fall campaign. The Bulldogs have presently won the last four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Regular-Season Championships in men's tennis and are the three-time defending league tournament champions. FSU has reached the NCAA Division II Elite Eight two of the past three years and made a school all-time best Final Four showing in 2016. Together, the Bulldog men's and women's tennis programs have combined for a total of 37 GLIAC Championships and made 42 NCAA Tournament appearances in program history.
