Ferris State Women's Tennis Falls To Southwest Baptist In NCAA Regional Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis squad had its historic season come to a close on Saturday (May 8) as the Bulldogs fell to Southwest Baptist (Mo.) by a 4-1 score in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Semifinals in Midland.

The second-seeded Bearcats claimed the doubles point and then took three of the first four completed singles matches to notch the win over the Bulldogs and advance to the regional final at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs got a 6-2, 6-3 win from Brittany Lavenant at the number six singles flight in the contest and also led at four singles when the match came to a finish.

Southwest Baptist earned wins at two and three doubles to start the day, but the Bulldogs held a 6-4 lead at one doubles when the round concluded.

In singles action, the Bearcats garnered straight-set wins at the one, three and five spots in the lineup.

The loss snapped a 16-match winning streak for the Bulldogs, who had not been beat by a NCAA Division II opponent all season.

This spring, the Bulldogs captured both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Regular Season and Tournament Championships, claiming their first league titles in women's tennis since 2002.

FSU was making its 21st all-time NCAA Tournament appearance and its first in six years.
