Two Ferris State Tennis Standouts Claim GLIAC Player Of Week Honors

Big Rapids, Mich. - A pair of Ferris State University men's and women's tennis standouts have earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Player of the Week honors.

Ferris State swept the awards, with Benjamin Lortie receiving GLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week and sophomore Maria Hernandez Ferrer earning GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week recognition.

Lortie led the Bulldogs to back-to-back regional home wins this past weekend in Big Rapids. Lortie came away with a 6-3, 7-5 win at two singles in FSU's 4-3 triumph over Tiffin on Friday while falling in a close 7-6 doubles contest at the top spot in the lineup. Meanwhile, on Saturday he came back to notch a 6-2 win at one doubles followed by a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win at two singles in a 7-0 win over Walsh. For the weekend, he was 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action for a 3-1 overall mark.

Meanwhile, Hernandez Ferrer helped the Bulldogs to a non-conference home split over the weekend. The Bulldog standout earned a victory at three singles on Friday in FSU's 5-2 setback to the Dragons, scoring a 7-6, 6-4 win. She was also victorious in doubles play with a 6-3 win at the third spot in the lineup in FSU's opening match of the weekend. On Saturday, she came back with a 6-1 victory at three doubles and earned a decisive 6-2, 6-1 triumph at four singles in FSU's 6-1 win over Walsh. For the weekend, she was a perfect 4-0 with two wins each in both singles and doubles play.

The Bulldogs will open GLIAC play on the road this weekend at Davenport on Friday (March 22) and Purdue Northwest on Saturday (March 23).
