Ferris Hits The Track At GLIAC Outdoor Meet

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University officially opened action in the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday (May 6) at Top Taggart Field.

The Bulldogs did not have any competitors in the multi-event competition that opened the meet on Wednesday (May 5), but had several performers hit the track on Thursday.

Freshman Christa Cwiek scored FSU's only points of the day with a seventh-place overall finish in the javelin (104-2) for the Bulldog women.

However, a number of other Bulldog competitors advanced to Friday's (May 7) finals after preliminary races on Thursday.

Freshman Alyssa Osika qualified for the finals in the 800 meters by clocking the second-fastest (2:15.2) overall preliminary-round performance.

Freshman Zoey Hohmann qualified for Friday's finals in the 200 meters with the seventh-fastest (25.56) qualifying time.  She also advanced to the 400-meter finals with the fourth-best (57.39) overall performance after placing second in her preliminary heat.

Senior Emily Cross reached the finals in the 100-meter hurdles by turning in the fifth-fastest (14.87) preliminary qualifying time.

Finally, for the women's team, freshman Shelby Janutol also advanced to the finals in the 1,500 meters with the eighth-best (4:44.47) effort of 12 qualifiers.

On the men's side, sophomore Justin Price reached the finals in the 400 meters by turning in the eighth-best (49.01) prelim time on Thursday.  He also narrowly missed qualifying for the finals in the 200 meters as he came in ninth overall (22.02) among preliminary times from four heats.

Freshman Ryan Chute also just missed advancing to the finals as he turned in the 13th-fastest time in the prelims of the 1,500 meters (4:03.03) with only 12 moving on to the finals.

Finally, freshman David Silversmith received ninth place overall in the day's final event, which was the 10,000 meters (31:55.29) and ran as a timed final.

The final day of competition is set for Friday (May 7) with field events beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT) and track events starting at 12 p.m. (EDT).

Due to the probability of rain on Friday, the men's pole vault competition has been moved indoors and will take place at Grand Valley State's facility in Allendale, Mich.  Competitors and coaches will be transported via bus from Top Taggart Field to GVSU at 9:15 a.m. (EDT) with the event competition starting at 12 p.m. (EDT).
