FSU Takes Part In Final Tune-Up Meet

The Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams held their final tune-up for the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships by taking part in the Northwood Invitational on Friday (April 30) in Midland, Mich.

The meet included FSU, Northwood, Northern Michigan, Lake Superior State and Alma along with unattached athletes.

Freshman Zoey Holmann won the 400 meters (58.34), junior Paige Onweller claimed the 1,500 meters (5:12.71) and senior Emily Cross took first place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.10). Cross also won the high jump (5-4.25) while sophomore Jessica Schewe claimed the pole vault (10-4).

Freshman Anna Rudd emerged victorious in the 3,000 meters (10:30.59) where the Bulldogs had five of the top six finishers.  Junior Sarah Creed came in third (10:55.31), senior Megan Josey was fourth (10:57.63), freshman Felicia Peacock wound up fifth (11:07.62) with freshman Jordan McGuire placing sixth (11:08.59) for FSU.

Sophomore Andrea Fogle took second place in the discus (129-0), junior Amy Joostberns was third in the discus (127-3) and senior Sarah Thomas came in eighth overall in the long jump (13-2).

Senior Mike Mangieri placed first in the 1,500 meters (4:02.18) and senior Greg Burns claimed the pole vault (15-7) in leading the Ferris State men's team.

Sophmore J.J. Vandenburg earned runner-up laurels in the hammer throw (162-7) and junior Alex Best finished second in the 3,000 meters (9:01.03) while junior Derek Childs placed fourth (9:19.79) in the same event.  Freshman Kyle Walch was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.88).

Freshman Gary Atkins claimed fifth place in the 100 meters (11.63), senior Dan Volk was fifth in the 800 meters (2:00.34) and freshman Jordan Slate wound up sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:19.73).

Senior Charles Mauris placed seventh in the hammer throw (136-3), senior Brian Reynolds took seventh place in the 1,500 meters (4:22.60) with freshman Tyler Weedon coming in eighth (4:25.09).

The Bulldog men also placed third in the 4x400-meter relay (3:35.88) with a quartet of freshman Michael Baldwin, Atkins, freshman Derrick Bartlett and Volk.

FSU will host the GLIAC Championships this Wednesday to Friday, May 5-7, at Top Taggart Field.
