Ferris Overpowers Davenport In Triumph

For the fifth time in its last six matches, the Ferris State University women's volleyball was victorious as the Bulldogs cruised to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12) non-conference decision over Davenport this Wednesday (Sept. 9) at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

With the win, Ferris State improves to 7-3 overall for the 2009 campaign and has won its last two matches to date.  Davenport's overall record dips to 2-3 with the loss. 

Neither team had a player in double-digure kills as a combined 29 individuals saw court time, including 17 from Ferris State.

Senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay), who was tabbed this week's (Sept. 9) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week, posted a squad-best eight kills on 13 attempts to register a .538 attack percentage.  Senior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs), junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central), and senior outside hitter Amanda Kettlewell (Marysville) all recorded four kills apiece for the Bulldogs, who hit at a .227 clip for the three-set match.  Kettlewell also generated an .800 hitting percentage as a result of her four kills in five attempts.  For Davenport, Megan Vanderhyde led the way with six kills.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey's (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) eight digs led all players in the match.  Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) was tops in assists for both teams with a 23-match total. 

In the first set, Ferris State snapped an 18-all tie on an Arielle Goodson kill and led the rest of the stanza as the Bulldogs notched a .125 attack percentage with 11 kills in 32 opportunities.

The second set saw FSU jump out to an 8-1 advantage and then use a 12-7 run (20-8) to dominate set.  The Bulldogs hit for .100 but the defense limited the Panthers to -.048 hitting.

Ferris State continued to build off the momentum gained in the opening two sets as the hosts turned in an impressive .478 hitting percentage in the third set with 14 kills in 23 attempts.  The set was close at the start before the Bulldogs went on a 14-5 scoring spurt to take a 19-9 lead.  Three FSU kills, including the last two by Amanda Kettlewell, put the match on ice for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs will return to action this Friday (Sept. 11) evening to begin GLIAC competition as the undefeated (8-0) Wayne State Warriors provide the opposition.  Opening serve for the conference opener is 7 p.m. (EDT) in Big Rapids, Mich.
