Lakers Claim Rivalry Match Win Over Ferris State

Allendale, Mich. – Host Grand Valley State was too much for the Ferris State University volleyball team on Friday (Oct. 23) evening as the Lakers recorded a 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rivalry match inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena at Allendale, Mich.

The Lakers took the first set of the match by a 25-20 count and then sealed the victory with narrow wins in the third and fourth sets after the Bulldogs had tied the match up with a 25-20 triumph in the second frame. GVSU won the third set 25-22 and the fourth by a 25-23 score as all four sets were determined by five points or less.

Grand Valley State posted a .056 attack percentage for the match and compiled 46 total kills compared to only 40 for the Bulldogs. FSU was limited to a .037 attack figure.

The Bulldogs were paced by senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) and junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central), who both tallied 10 kills for the outing. Goodson added four solo blocks with three assists as Ferris netted 11 team blocks on the night.

Sophomore hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) totaled a match-high 19 digs while junior Dana Ruttle (Reed City) contributed 14 digs and sophomore Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) finished with 11 digs. Freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) had 35 assists for FSU, which played 13 different players in the rivalry match before a crowd of 954 fans.

Meanwhile, the Lakers were led by Whitney Tremain with 13 kills and Krysta Kornack had 12 kills. Both Meghan Scanlon and Olivia Kohler recorded 20 assists and Janelle Beaudry added 12 digs. Katey Crichton also reached double-figures in digs with 10 for the match.

GVSU registered eight service aces while the Bulldogs had only three. FSU held a 65-56 edge in total digs, but the Lakers also had 13 total blocks.

With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 17-8 overall and 8-4 in the GLIAC standings. The Lakers improved to 14-9 overall and 9-3 in conference action.

Ferris State continues action on the road with a league match at Saginaw Valley State on Friday, Oct. 30, starting at 7 p.m. (EDT) in University Center, Mich.
