Ferris Volleyball Garners Sweep At Lake Superior State

Ferris State broke though for its 12th win in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's volleyball play this season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-23) sweep against Lake Superior State this Saturday (Oct. 31) Halloween afternoon at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 

The Bulldogs, who ended a three-match losing string with the win, improve their season record to 18-9 overall and 12-5 in the conference's North Division this fall.

Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) led the way for Ferris State with a match-high 12 kills on .417 hitting.  Senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) produced a .471 attack percentage with nine kills and senior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) had seven kills on .500 hitting as the Bulldogs produced a .324 attack percentage as a team.

Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt), a redshirt freshman setter, totaled a match-leading 36 assists and added six digs as both teams generated 44 apiece in that statistical category.  Sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) garnered a team-high 12 digs and was joined in double figures by junior libero Whitney Rupp (West Bloomfield/Mercy), who racked up 10 digs and served up a match-leading three service aces.  Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) contributed nine digs in the win as 15 different Bulldogs saw action in at least one set.  

Ferris State took control in the opening set as the Bulldogs held off the Lakers while posting a .294 hitting percentage to LSSU's .188 clip en route to a 25-17 win.

The second set was almost as identical to the first as three ties and a pair of lead changes occurred in both as FSU would go on to another 25-17 decision.  The Bulldogs maintained an 11-point lead (21-10) at one stage of the set before Lake Superior State was able to close the gap to six (23-17), but a pair of attack errors sealed its fate.  Ferris State concluded the set hitting for .219 efficiency while the Bulldog defense limited the Lakers to an even .000 success rate.

Both teams battled back and forth in the third set before Ferris State sealed the win with three unanswered points as Ashley Huntey's service ace tied the set up at 23-all.  Arielle Goodson and Samantha Fordyce would follow with kills to end the contest as the Bulldogs tallied a .444 hitting percentage while LSSU generated a .351 attack percentage for the set.  The score was tied 10 times in the set to go with four lead changes.  

Ferris State will return home for its final two 2009 regular-season matches next weekend, Nov. 6-7, hosting a pair of Upper Peninsula schools in Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan, respectively in Big Rapids, Mich.  The Bulldogs square off against Michigan Tech on Friday (Nov. 6) in a 12 p.m. (EST) match at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena before taking on Northern Michigan Saturday (Nov. 7) at 2 p.m. (EST).  Prior to the regular-season finale, Ferris State will pay tribute to its four graduating seniors on the 2009 team.
