Volleyball Falls To Hillsdale In GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals

The Ferris State women's volleyball dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 15-25, 15-25) decision to Hillsdale this Wednesday (Nov. 11) evening in 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Quarterfinal-Round match action at HC's Jesse Philips Arena in Hillsdale, Mich.

With the loss, Ferris State is eliminated from conference postseason tourney play as the Bulldogs fall to 19-11 overall this season.  Ferris' appearance in the conference tournament this season represented the program's 12th straight as the Bulldogs are now 10-11 all-time in GLIAC Tournament competition. 

Ferris State will now hope to earn a berth in the 2009 NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament with bids being announced this Sunday (Nov. 15) evening.  The announcement of the 2009 NCAA-II Tourney field will begin at 10 p.m. (EST).

Senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) was one of two Bulldogs with double-digit kills as she totaled a team-high 13 kills while producing a .481 hitting percentage.  Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) hammered 12 kill while posting a .214 attack percentage.  A pair of seniors, middle hitter Sarah Lark (Alma) and outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) contributed six kills apiece.

Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) distributed a match-leading 37 assists while chalking up six digs and a pair of block assists.

Defensively, sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey's (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) 16 digs marked a match best.  Joining Huntey in double-digit digs was sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville), who registered 12 digs as the Bulldogs had a 50-45 digs advantage for the contest.  Junior libero Whitney Rupp (West Bloomfield/Mercy) had seven digs to go with a squad-best three service aces.

Ferris State also produced a 46-45 lead in kills, but was outhit by Hillsdale as the Chargers tallied a .319 attack percentage to the Bulldogs' .155 clip.  Amanda Bigney's 16 kills was tops for Hillsdale while Ashlee Crowder chipped in with 14 kills for the GLIAC South Division champions.

The Bulldogs started out the league tourney match by hitting at .308 efficiency to claim the first set.  With the score tied at 21-all, FSU snapped the tie on a Samantha Fordyce kill to go ahead 22-21 and held on for the win. 

Hillsdale proceeded to win the next set as the Chargers generated a .476 hitting percentage to Ferris' .208 attack percentage.  HC started out with a 14-9 scoring run and led by as many as 10 points (24-14) near the end of the set.

In the third set, Hillsdale prevailed by a second straight 25-15 score as the hosts turned in a .333 hitting percentage.  A kill by Kristy Gilchrist pulled the Bulldogs to within 20-14, but the Chargers would tally the next four points to claim a 24-14 lead and won the set on a Bulldog service error. 

Hillsdale took a 10-4 lead in the fourth set and would go on to capture the set by a 25-15 margin.  HC finished the set hitting at a .286 clip while the Chargers limited FSU to a -.061 attack percentage.

By virtue of its win, Hillsdale will now serve as the host school for the GLIAC Women's Volleyball Tournament semifinals and finals to be held this weekend (Nov. 14-15).
