Ferris Sweeps GVSU Before Capacity Crowd

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team played before a packed house and posted a decisive 3-0 win over rival Grand Valley State (25-21, 25-15, 25-22) this Wednesday (Sept. 14) evening in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division match at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

The win brings the Bulldogs to a 6-1 overall record and improves them to 2-1 in the GLIAC. FSU is currently 5-0 when playing at home this season.

Ferris State had three players who contributed with double-digit kills, adding to the Bulldogs' total of 45 kills in the match. Senior outside hitter Aly Brecht (Alma) led the match with 13 kills. Senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) had the next highest figure with 11 kills and added a team-best 14 digs.

Freshman middle hitter Courtney Rehm (Portage/Central) also contributed, having 10 herself, which included a .368 kill percentage. Rehm flourished in the second set with three consecutive kills to bring the Bulldogs to a 12-7 lead.

Junior setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) tallied 37 assists, donating to a team total of 40 helpers. Fordyce currently sits at 265 assists on the season, compared to her 213 at the same point in the 2010 campaign.  She also chipped in with 11 digs.

Six of Ferris State's nine active players contributed to the kill count. The Bulldogs also totaled seven blocks compared to Grand Valley's three. Junior middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) led the Bulldogs in blocks with four block assists. Junior middle hitter Lindsey Miller (Granger, Ind.) had two block solo's on the Lakers' attacks and assisted on another for a total of three blocks in the match.

Grand Valley State was paced by Stacey Catalano with 10 kills in the match.  She also totaled 11 digs in a double-double effort.

The Bulldogs continue their homestand this weekend as they host two GLIAC teams. The Lake Superior State Lakers take on Ferris State on Saturday (Sept. 17) with a 2 p.m. (EDT) start time. The Northwood Timberwolves will visit Sunday (Sept. 18) also with a 2 p.m. (EDT) start. Both matches will take place at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
