Ferris State Volleyball Shuts Out Wayne State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team came out victorious again in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play as the Bulldogs topped the Wayne State Warriors with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 29-27) result this Sunday (Sept. 25) afternoon at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids.

The victory gives nationally 23rd-ranked FSU a perfect 10-0 home record to date for the year and improves their record to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in GLIAC play. Ferris State is currently on a six-match winning streak. The Warriors fell to 5-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

The three-set match saw plenty of ties and lead changes with 35 tied scores and 16 lead changes overall. The second set, which ended with a 25-21 result, had the score tied 17 times and featured eight lead changes.

Ferris State had three student-athletes who posted double-digit kills for the afternoon. Senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) led the match with 16 kills, which included seven in the third set.  Both junior middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) and junior outside hitter Aly Brecht (Alma) tallied 10 kills apiece. 

Junior setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) totaled 37 of the Bulldogs 40 assists. The total included 12 helpers in the first set, 11 in the second and 14 assists in the third set.

Senior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) had 19 digs in the match for FSU while sophomore setter Brandi Merren (Hopkins) tallied 13 digs.

Overall, Ferris State totaled 43 kills in the match. The Bulldogs had nine blocks where the Warriors knocked down eight Ferris State attempts.

The Bulldogs will conclude their seven-match home stand this Saturday, Oct. 1, as the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals visit the Ewigleben Sports Arena with the action beginning at 2 p.m. (EDT).
