FSU Volleyball Beats ODU In Four Sets

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball team won its 20th match of the season with a 3-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road victory at Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Oct. 29) evening in Columbus, Ohio.

The Bulldogs won the first set 25-19 before ODU responded with a 25-21 win in the second frame.  However, FSU was a 27-25 winner in set three and took the match with a 25-17 triumph in the fourth set to improve to 20-2 overall and 14-1 in the GLIAC.  Ohio Dominican dropped to 11-14 overall and 4-11 in the conference.

Junior middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and hit .410 for the match.  Meanwhile, senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) chipped in with 15 kills and 15 digs in a double-double showing.

The Bulldogs also received 15 kills from junior hitter Aly Brecht (Alma) and 11 kills by freshman middle hitter Courtney Rehm (Portage/Central).

Senior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) had a personal career-high 37 digs for the Bulldogs.  Her 37 digs was one shy of matching the school record of 38 digs by Sheri (Maus) Harris at Lake Superior State in 1998 (11/1/98).

Junior setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) added 54 assists and 11 digs for FSU, which won its fourth consecutive encounter.

Overall, the Bulldogs totaled 62 kills to 56 for the Panthers and hit .243 compared to ODU's .213 showing.  The Panthers recorded 83 digs to FSU's 78, but Ferris State had seven blocks to only five for Ohio Dominican. Both teams finished with three aces and seven service errors.

Rachel Billing led Ohio Dominican with 15 kills and Tara Winner had 11.  Stacy Rogg contributed 29 digs while Lauren Rindler had 16 and Billing added 15.

The match featured 10 lead changes while the score was tied 17 times.

Ferris State will wrap up its two-match trip to Ohio by visiting Tiffin on Sunday (Oct. 30) morning for a 11 a.m. (ET) league tilt in Tiffin, Ohio.
