Huntey & Sutton Earn Academic Honors

Big Rapids, Mich. - Two Ferris State University women's volleyball players have been rewarded for their academic and athletic accomplishments by being chosen to the Capital One Division II Academic All-District IV First Team.
Senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) and junior middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) both earned the distinction for the 2011 season. FSU had two of the six overall selections on the all-district squad as Huntey and Sutton were joined by Jennifer Costello of Missouri S&T, Southern Indiana's Danielle LaGrange, Clara Leutheuser of Hillsdale and Northern Kentucky's Jenna Schreiver.
The academic all-district teams are chosen by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members and recognize the nation's top student athletes for their combined performance on the floor and in the classroom. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
A 5-10 outside hitter, Huntey currently leads the Bulldogs in both kills (380) and total points (443) this season. The All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First Team pick ranks second in kills and third in points among the conference leaders while ranking in the top 40 nationally in both categories.
Recently, Huntey became only the seventh player in school history to notch both 1,000 career kills and digs this campaign. She's also earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors four times this year and has totaled 10 kills or more in 24 matches.
A team captain, Huntey is a two-time All-GLIAC honoree and a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team selection. The two-time D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award recipient was previously named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District IV Second Team and has started 113 of 117 career matches to date.
Meanwhile, Sutton is having her best season to date as she ranks second on the squad with 313 kills and holds a team-best .357 attack percentage in 29 matches. She's also second overall with 71 blocks on the year. She's currently fifth in attack percentage and eighth in kills in the conference.
Sutton is also a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree and has twice earned D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award laurels. She also earned All-GLIAC First Team honors this season for her performance.
Huntey and Sutton have helped lead FSU to a 26-3 overall record to date and a number 11 national ranking. The Bulldogs won the GLIAC North Division crown this season and emerged as league co-champions.
FSU has earned a NCAA-II Midwest Regional Tournament berth and will face Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Nov. 18) in a 2:30 p.m. (ET) regional quarterfinal at Jesse Philips Arena in Hillsdale, Mich. The match will be broadcast live by the Bulldog Sports Network and Sunny 97.3 with Rob Bentley providing the play-by-play coverage starting with the pregame show one-half hour prior to match time.
