Ferris State Volleyball Entertains Young Fans With Big Win On "Books & Balls" Day

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team put on a show for young fans on Friday (Nov. 8) afternoon as the Bulldogs stormed past visiting Lake Superior State in a 3-0 sweep on "Books & Balls Day" at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids.

Students from various area schools were in attendance for the special noon start and saw the Bulldogs improve to 19-7 overall and 12-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings.  It marked the fourth annual such event for the Bulldogs.

FSU started quickly by winning the first set 25-19 before taking set two 25-20.  The Bulldogs were then dominating in the final third set as Ferris State prevailed 25-14 to complete the match.

Lake Superior State fell to 4-18 overall and 2-13 in the conference standings with the setback.

Ferris State hit a strong .436 in the first set en route to a .366 attack showing on the day.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs also limited LSSU to a .113 hitting figure, which included -.029 in the final frame.

Senior middle hitter Angi Kent paced the Bulldogs with a match-high 11 kills while hitting .455 with only one error on 22 attacks.  FSU also received 10 kills from junior hitter Courtney Rehm.

Overall, Ferris State compiled 45 kills with 45 digs, nine blocks and two aces to offset nine service errors.  The Bulldogs held Lake Superior State to 31 total kills with 47 digs, three blocks, five aces and four errors from the service line.

In addition to the two players who reached double-figures in kills, FSU also also received seven from sophomore outside hitter Megan Vander Meer along with six by middle hitter Caroline Heitzman and five from sophomore Alexis Huntey.

Huntey paced the Bulldogs defensively with 13 digs while senior libero Brandie Merren chipped in 11 digs.  Kent led the Bulldogs at the net with four block assists while Danielle Dowd came off the bench to record both of the Bulldogs' service aces.

Ferris State freshman setter Stephanie Sikorski tallied 32 assists in the victory.

Lake Superior State was led by Big Rapids native Chloe Balanda, who had 10 kills in the match.  Meghan Drobish totaled a match-high 21 digs and Janelle Nagy had 23 assists.

The match saw a total of only four lead changes as the Bulldogs rolled to the win before spending time signing autographs for the young fans after the contest.

Ferris State will play its final regular-season home match on Saturday (Nov. 9) as FSU hosts Saginaw Valley State at 3 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.  

The Bulldogs will honor their two seniors in Angi Kent and Brandie Merren as part of Senior Day activities prior to the match.
