Ferris State's Alexis Huntey Chosen As GLIAC North Volleyball Player Of The Week

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the second consecutive week, a Ferris State University women's volleyball player has been chosen as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week.

FSU junior Alexis Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) received this week's nod after helping the Bulldogs start league play unbeaten this past weekend. It comes on the heels of fellow junior outside hitter Megan Vander Meer (Grand Rapids) receiving the same distinction a week ago.

Huntey helped the Bulldogs register a pair of straight-set road victories to open GLIAC play this past weekend. She  hit an impressive .409 for the weekend and compiled a team-high 20 kills along with a squad-best 31 total digs as FSU rolled to 3-0 wins over Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State.

The Bulldog junior posted eight kills with 18 digs, two blocks and an ace in Friday's road triumph at SVSU and then added 12 kills to go with 13 digs, two blocks and an ace in Saturday's victory at Wayne State. Huntey averaged 3.33 kills and 5.17 digs per set for the nationally 15th-ranked Bulldogs while also recording four blocks and two aces on the weekend.

Presently, Huntey has tallied 75 digs, 43 kills, 14 blocks and eight aces thru six matches to date this season for FSU, which owns a 4-2 overall record. Both of the Bulldogs' setbacks to date have come against teams currently found among the top five teams in the country.

A year ago, the Stanwood native helped the Bulldogs win the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship and earn a berth in the NCAA-II Elite Eight in her first season at Ferris State.

The Bulldogs return home to host Walsh in their 2014 home opener this Friday (Sept. 19) night beginning at 7 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena. FSU then hosts Malone on Saturday (Sept. 20) to open a tripleheader on the FSU campus at 3 p.m. (ET) with soccer and football to follow versus GVSU at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

Following this weekend's action, the Bulldog volleyball team ventures to Allendale to face Grand Valley State for the first time this season on Tuesday (Sept. 23) night in what will be a rematch of last year's NCAA-II Midwest Regional title match at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
