#18 Ferris State Opens Home Invitational With Convincing Sweep Over California (Pa.)

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 18th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad opened its 2015 campaign with a 3-0 sweep of the California (Pa.) Vulcans on Friday (Sept. 4) in the Ferris State Invitational held in Big Rapids.

Senior middle hitter Caroline Heitzman led the way with nine kills in a balanced Bulldog attack. Meanwhile, senior Megan Vander Meer added seven kills while both senior Alexis Huntey and freshman Katie Placek chipped in five kills each help to fuel the Bulldogs. Junior setter Stephanie Sikorski posted a match-high 22 assists.

Ferris State won the first set 25-18 and then claimed the second 25-14 and the third 25-13 to successively to knock out the Vulcans. FSU posted seven blocks in the outing to only one for California.

FSU also fired at a .242 percentage in the final set to put away the Vulcans.

The Bulldogs only trailed three times in the entire match, all in the first set, before taking off and leaving the Vulcans behind.

California (Pa.) had 13 service errors as opposed to Ferris State's eight, as the Vulcans only pushed 71 percent of serves into play.

Senior libero Danielle Dowd led Ferris State with 14 digs, with Placek, who received her first career start and played in all three sets, finishing with 13 digs. Huntey added 10 digs for FSU.

The reigning GLIAC Champions will look to start the year off by running their winning streak to two as they face Missouri Western State at 6 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena tonight (Sept. 4) to finish the first day of the Ferris State Invitational.

On Saturday (Sept. 5), Ferris State is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (ET) match against McKendree (Ill.) before closing out the invitational with a nd a 5 p.m. (ET) start against Metro State (Colo.).

All of Ferris State's opponents in this weekend's event went to the 2014 NCAA Division II Volleyball tournament and received votes in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll.
