Ferris State Volleyball Sweeps Two Matches To Wrap Up "Bash At The Beach"

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad scored a pair of impressive wins on Saturday (Sept. 10) as the Bulldogs wrapped up action in the "Bash at the Beach" hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The Bulldogs closed the tournament with a 3-1 mark by beating regional foe McKendree (Ill.) and Florida Tech in non-league action by scores of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively. The two wins came on the heels of a first day split in the eight-team tournament on Friday that saw FSU knock off nationally top 20-ranked Washburn (Kan.).

Ferris State opened Saturday action by beating McKendree 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-14 in a four-set triumph. The win over the Bearcats came against a fellow Midwest Regional opponent.

The Bulldogs were led in match one by freshman hitter Allyson Cappel with 12 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Katie Placek added 10 kills and 15 digs with junior middle hitter Marissa Kronner totaling 10 kills as well.

Along with the three players in double-digit kills, FSU also received 37 assists and 16 digs from senior setter Stephanie Sikorski to go with 17 digs by libero Lauren Reminga. Katie Konjarevich added 11 digs.

Ferris State hit .187 for the match and tallied 50 kills while notching 84 digs on the day. FSU also recorded six aces. McKendree, meanwhile, was limited to a .107 attack figure and came up with 42 kills, 76 digs and five aces. Both teams finished with 11 blocks at the net.

In the tourney finale, the Bulldogs swept Florida Tech 25-21, 25-23 and 25-23. The victory was aided by FSU's .237 attack figure.

The Bulldogs were paced in the second match by Ayanna Buckley with 14 kills. Kronner added 13 kills while Sikorski netted 42 assists and seven digs.

Defensively, Reminga produced a match-high 18 digs while Placek contributed 13 digs to go with six kills.

Ferris State finished the match with 44 kills, 58 digs, three blocks and three aces. Florida Tech compiled 32 kills, 48 digs, six blocks and six aces, but hit only .143 for the match.

The Bulldogs had two players named to the "Bash at the Beach" All-Tournament Team including Sikorski and Placek.

FSU will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on the road at Northwood next Friday (Sept. 16) with match time set for 7 p.m. (ET) in Midland. The Bulldogs then visit Hillsdale on Saturday (Sept. 17) for a 2 p.m. (ET) league encounter.
