Bulldog Volleyball Sweeps Walsh In First GLIAC Home Action This Season

Big Rapids, Mich.- The Ferris State women's volleyball squad opened its home Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schedule with a decisive 3-0 victory over the Walsh Cavaliers on Friday (Sept. 23) afternoon at the Ewigleben Sports Arena. 

The Cavaliers kept it close in the first during the special noontime match, but the Bulldogs shut them down in the final two sets, winning 25-20, 25-15 and 25-12 overall.

Ferris State hit .263 for the match while Walsh finished at -.021 for the afternoon. WU hit .000 in back-to-back sets to open the day.

Freshman outside hitter Allyson Cappel led all attackers in the match with 14 kills for Ferris State and hit .571 for the afternoon. It was a balanced attack for FSU as 10 different Bulldogs registered at least one kill. No one other than Cappel finished with more than seven kills overall.

At the net, junior middle hitter Maria Kronner had four block assists while junior outside hitter Ayanna Buckley chipped in two in the winning effort for the Bulldogs.

Senior setter Stephanie Sikorski dished out 36 assists and had more than Walsh notched as a team (22).

Ferris State registered three service aces as Kronner produced two and senior setter Jenna Way added the other ace.

Defensively, junior libero Lauren Reminga led Ferris State with 10 digs while senior Kaley Konjarevich had eight digs for FSU. The Bulldogs combined for 41 digs and 11 Bulldogs earned at least one in the match.

Justine Coffman had six kills to pace the Cavaliers, who finished with just 22 total kills in the match. Ferris State combined for 46 kills over three sets. Olivia Zanolli had 18 assists for Walsh in leading the team.

The Cavaliers out-blocked Ferris State 12-10 for the day.

Ferris State improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC play with the victory, which came before a large crowd of local elementary students along with Ferris State faculty/staff.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 24) as they head to Grand Rapids to face Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Davenport starting at 2:30 p.m. (ET) and 5:30 p.m. (ET), respectively. Both matches will be hosted on the DU campus.
