Ferris State Opens Nation's Largest Volleyball Tourney By Winning 10th-Straight Match

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad ran its winning streak to 10-straight matches as the Bulldogs opened the nation's largest collegiate tournament with a decisive 3-0 win over Truman State (Mo.) on Friday (Oct. 14) in the Midwest Region Crossover at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill.

Ferris State, which is seeded third in the event from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), rolled to a 25-23, 25-16, 25-16 victory over the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) foe. With the win, FSU improved to 14-5 overall this season.

The Bulldogs posted an impressive .277 hitting figure for the contest with 42 kills and only 11 errors on 112 total attacks. FSU also came up with 54 digs, five aces and four blocks in the win.

Junior middle hitter Maria Kronner and sophomore Katie Placek each paced Ferris State with a match-high 10 kills apiece. Placek added 12 digs in a double-double performance.

Ferris State senior setter Stephanie Sikorski notched 34 assists and posted seven digs in the victory while FSU also received 14 digs from libero Lauren Reminga along with 11 from freshman Allyson Cappel, who added seven kills. The Bulldogs' Ayanna Buckley also contributed seven kills with Mekayla Carey adding six kills. 

Kronner led FSU at the net with two solo blocks while Placek had two aces.

Truman State, which dropped to 7-12 overall this year, was limited to a .142 attack figure. They compiled 33 kills and 17 mistakes on 113 attempts. In addition, TSU had 54 digs, three blocks and two aces with nine service errors.

Kayla Bastian led Truman State with seven kills and 14 digs while Meghan Gasper totaled 15 assists and 10 digs. Lauren Wacker also chipped in with 15 digs.

Ferris State continues action on Saturday (Oct. 15) in the Midwest Region Crossover against the GLVC's top seed in Lewis (Ill.) starting at 11 a.m. (ET). FSU then faces Quincy (Ill.) to wrap up the event beginning at 5 p.m. (ET).
