Ferris State Volleyball Closes Year With Hard-Fought Setback In NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad saw its 2017 camapign come to an end on Friday (Dec. 1) night as the Bulldogs suffered a hard-fought 3-2 setback to host Lewis (Ill.) in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Semifinals at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill.

The Bulldogs held a 2-1 lead in the match before Lewis rallied and scored a close 15-11 decision in the deciding fifth frame to end FSU's season for the second-straight year.

The Flyers won the first set 25-21 before the Bulldogs responded with a 25-23 victory in the second followed by a 25-22 triumph in the third frame. However, the Flyers bounced back for a 25-10 win in the fourth to set up the deciding fifth set where they jumped in front early and held off FSU.

Ferris State got a team-high 19 kills from sophomore outside hitter Allyson Cappel, who also added 20 digs. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' Courtney Brewer added 18 kills while senior middle hitter Ayanna Buckley posted 11 kills in the setback.

Ferris State also got an impressive 34 digs from senior libero Lauren Reminga to go with 14 by Katie Placek in addition to Cappel's 20 overall. Setter Maeve Grimes totaled 47 assists.

Lewis was paced by standout Aly Schenider, who notched 19 kills. Maddie Seliga notched 16 kills while Elizabeth Hyland had 21 digs.

Overall, the Bulldogs finished with 55 kills and had 89 digs with five aces, but was held to a .157 hitting figure. The Flyers notched 57 kills and compiled 88 digs with nine aces along with a .238 hitting percentage.

Ferris State closed its season with a 24-8 overall record with the Flyers advancing on to the regional finals on Saturday to face Rockhurst (Mo.).

The Bulldogs made their seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the 22nd overall in school history while also reaching at least the regional semifinals for the seventh year in a row.
